A leather cloak is a type of cloak that appears in NetHack. It is naturally made of leather.

Generation

Leather cloaks make up 1125 (0.8%) of all armor randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock leather cloaks.

Mercenaries have a 12 chance of generating with a leather cloak.[1] Quest guardians are commonly given leather cloaks as well:

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

Per commit eed952a0, each item in the death drop left behind by a leather golem has a 16 chance of being a leather cloak.

Description

While worn, a leather cloak grants 1 base AC and MC1.

Strategy

Though strictly superior to the more common dwarvish and orcish cloaks, leather cloaks are generally used as temporary coverage for body armor until you can procure a better magical cloak, such as a cloak of protection, cloak of magic resistance or even an elven cloak.

History

The leather cloak is introduced in NetHack 3.4.0, where the buglist indicates that it is meant to resolve the incongruity of human soldiers and other mercenaries being generated with elven cloaks. From this version to NetHack 3.4.3, including variants based on those versions, the leather cloak is one of the only cloaks to not have at least MC2, making it sub-optimal compared even to other non-magical cloaks.

Variants

In some variants with object materials systems, the leather cloak may be renamed to a plain cloak or simply a cloak.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, the leather cloak is one of a few types of cloak that cannot be upgraded or produced by upgrading itself, making it much less desirable unless a hero already has MC2 or better, e.g. from a cornuthaum or mithril-coat. Note that various cloaks and other items retain their MC values from NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions, and many of them can be upgraded or produced by upgrading another cloak.

GruntHack

In GruntHack, the leather cloak is simply known as a "cloak", with its material always appended to its name (e.g., "a dragonhide cloak"). Its base material is leather.

Kobold heroes in roles that start with basic armor or jackets will instead be given a cloak due to their size.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the leather cloak is simply known as a "cloak", with its material always appended to its name—a cloak grants 0 base AC, 2 base DR and MC1 while worn.

Binders that do not start the game with a particular inventory will begin with a leather cloak, including incantifier Binders. Human, incantifier, and vampire Nobles start each game with a +1 leather cloak. Non-drow Troubadours start each game with a +1 leather cloak (including incantifier Troubadours). Elven heroes in roles that start with a leather cloak will instead be given an elven cloak, and drow Troubadors will be given droven chain mail in place of the role's starting leather cloak.

Mayor Cummerbund is always generated with a leather cloak, and player monster exiles will always generate with a leather cloak.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, the item is renamed to a "plain cloak".

A plain cloak can be combined with an amulet of guarding at a furnace to create a cloak of protection.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, the item is known simply as a "cloak" with its material appended to its name.

The Paladin always generates with a regular cloak, and cultists have an effective 415 chance of generating with a regular cloak. Mercenaries that can wear cloaks and do not generate with a racial cloak have a 12 chance of generating with a regular cloak, and gnolls have a 15 chance of generating with a regular cloak.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, the Ninja starts each game with a +1 leather cloak. Bards also start each game with a +1 leather cloak, as in dNetHack.

The Crown Royal Cloak is an artifact leather cloak that is the first sacrifice gift for Drunks.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the item is renamed to a "plain cloak", and details for monster generation and behavior apply as in EvilHack.

Upgrading a plain cloak will produce a mummy wrapping, and vice versa.
